Plug-in hybrids have always been a topic of debate among car enthusiasts. Some believe they offer the best of both worlds, while others argue they represent the worst aspects of both electric and combustion vehicles. Personally, I find plug-in hybrids to be a practical choice, especially when used in the right circumstances.
Over the past two months and 3,100 miles, I’ve been driving a used 2023 Volvo V90 T8 Recharge, replacing my aging 2001 Volkswagen Golf and 2006 Land Rover LR3. The decision to switch to a PHEV has proven to be a smart move for me. Not only have I reduced my monthly repair costs, but I’ve also seen a significant drop in fuel expenses.

The Volvo V90 T8 Recharge boasts a powerful 455 horsepower engine, a combination of a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor. The latest model offers improved performance and a simpler design compared to its predecessors. The new Android Automotive OS infotainment system enhances the overall driving experience, although there are still some room for improvements.
Volvo V90 PHEV: Costs and Efficiency
On a daily basis, I cover around 35 miles, and the Volvo V90 has significantly reduced my refueling costs. Operating mainly on electricity, the car consumes half the amount of fuel compared to my old Golf, and four times less than the LR3. The electric driving efficiency is impressive, with an average of 3.65 miles per kWh.

The V90 T8 Recharge offers a real-world fuel economy of 50 mpg, with the gasoline engine kicking in when the battery is depleted, providing a respectable 34 mpg. The car’s electric range of up to 54 miles is achievable in practical scenarios, with my personal best reaching 71 miles on a single charge.
Annoyances
Despite its numerous advantages, the Volvo V90 T8 Recharge has a few quirks that can be bothersome. Fake buttons and redundant features, such as the unused left arrow on the steering wheel, can be confusing. The car’s overzealous collision detection system and the need for repeated screen taps to switch drive modes are additional annoyances.

However, these issues do not significantly impact the overall driving experience. The car’s reliability has been solid so far, with no major issues reported. Regular maintenance, including an upcoming oil change and fluid replacements, are on schedule to ensure the vehicle’s longevity.
