SpaceX is offering a surprise upgrade to its earliest Starlink adopters, replacing first-generation routers with newer Router Mini models for free. The move comes as SpaceX discontinues software updates for its Gen 1 routers, known as UTR-201, which were originally shipped with round-dish kits back in 2020.
In an email to eligible customers, SpaceX explained that the upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to enhance security, performance, and reliability. The Router Mini, a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router, is a significant improvement over the Gen 1 router’s Wi-Fi 5 capabilities. Typically sold for $40, the Router Mini is being offered as a thank you to longstanding customers.
While customers can technically continue using their Gen 1 router even after updates cease, SpaceX cautioned that performance may degrade over time, along with potential security risks due to the lack of future patches. The company emphasized that swapping routers is a simple process that can lead to improved Wi-Fi coverage and reliability.
This upgrade aligns with SpaceX’s broader goal of modernizing its Starlink network, which now serves over 8 million users worldwide in more than 150 countries. As adoption of the satellite internet service accelerates, Starlink’s web traffic has more than doubled in 2025. SpaceX is also on track to have 10,000 satellites in orbit by early 2026.
This latest move follows a recent warning from SpaceX, where customers were urged to update dormant Starlink dishes by a specific deadline to avoid permanent disablement. The emphasis on security and reliability improvements underscores SpaceX’s commitment to delivering a seamless and efficient experience for all Starlink users.
For Gen 1 router owners, the message is clear: SpaceX is evolving its technology, and customers can enjoy a free upgrade to stay connected with the latest advancements in satellite internet services.
