Tesla has introduced the 2026 Model Y Performance in the United States, featuring a new capability called vehicle-to-load (V2L). This technology allows owners to export energy from the car’s high-voltage battery to power tools or appliances with the use of a separate adapter.
The official confirmation of V2L support came in response to a comment on X, where Tesla clarified that the Model Y Performance only supports vehicle-to-load through the Tesla Outlet Adapter. This adapter, priced at $80, connects to the latest generation Mobile Connector and enables the car to output a maximum of 120 volts at 20 amps, providing up to 2.4 kilowatts of power to household outlets.
While Tesla may have been slow to implement V2L compared to other electric vehicle manufacturers like Hyundai, Kia, Ford, and General Motors, the Model Y Performance now joins the Cybertruck as the second Tesla EV to offer this feature. The Cybertruck, which debuted in 2019, supports both vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home (V2H), allowing it to power an entire house during an outage when connected to a Powerwall battery storage system.
It’s worth noting that using unofficial adapters to access V2L functionality on Tesla vehicles, including the Model Y Performance, may void the warranty. Therefore, it is recommended to use the official Tesla Outlet Adapter to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Overall, the addition of V2L support to the 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance enhances its versatility and practicality, allowing owners to use their electric vehicle as a mobile power source for various applications. With this advancement, Tesla continues to innovate and expand the capabilities of its electric vehicle lineup.
