Tesla has issued a recall for its Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) Cybertruck Long Range model due to faulty brake rotors that could potentially lead to the wheels falling off. The issue was brought to light by MotorTrend, who first noticed the problem. According to a notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, Tesla explained that “brake rotor stud holes may crack and allow the stud to separate from the wheel hub.”
This recall impacts all 173 of the $70,000 Cybertrucks that Tesla has sold, all of which are equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. The company has acknowledged three warranty claims that could be related to this issue but has stated that there have been no reported collisions, fatalities, or injuries as a result of the faulty brake rotors.
Tesla further explained that on affected vehicles, the stud hole in the wheel rotor may become strained during high severity road perturbations and cornering, leading to the formation of cracks. If these cracks continue to develop with use and strain, the wheel stud could eventually detach from the wheel hub. In response to this issue, Tesla has committed to replacing both the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts at no cost to the owners.
Owners of the affected Cybertruck Long Range models are advised to contact Tesla for further instructions on how to proceed with the recall process. It is crucial for the safety of the drivers and other road users that this issue is addressed promptly to prevent any potential accidents or incidents. Tesla has assured its customers that they are taking the necessary steps to rectify the problem and ensure the continued safety and reliability of their vehicles.
