NJ Turnpike to Remove Tesla Superchargers for Less-Compatible CCS1 Chargers
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) has made a surprising decision to replace Tesla Superchargers with CCS1 chargers at its service plazas. This move, announced by Tesla Charging on X, will see all 64 Tesla V3 Supercharger stalls removed from the Turnpike, sparking concern among Tesla and non-Tesla owners.
Since 2014, Tesla has had a presence on the Turnpike, gradually expanding to 64 V3 Supercharger stalls by 2023. The decision to replace these with CCS1 chargers raises questions, especially as the Applegreen-operated sites won’t be operational until later this year.

Transition Period
Tesla’s Supercharger network on the Turnpike has been known for its reliability and cost-effectiveness, serving both Tesla and non-Tesla EVs. With the rise of the North American Charging Standard (NACS), Tesla’s network has become a preferred choice for many EV owners.
However, Applegreen’s CCS1 chargers, which will replace Tesla’s Superchargers, have limitations in terms of compatibility and user experience. These chargers, resembling traditional gas stations, are costlier and less user-friendly than Tesla’s Superchargers.
Despite Tesla’s proposals to upgrade the Superchargers to include universal compatibility and better billing systems, NJTA opted for an exclusive deal with Applegreen. This decision has been met with criticism, with concerns about reduced options, convenience, and reliability for EV owners.
Tesla’s Response
Anticipating the NJTA’s decision, Tesla has proactively built replacement Supercharger stalls at new locations off the Turnpike. While this may inconvenience some EV owners, Tesla is committed to ensuring charging continuity and expanding access to electric vehicle charging.
It remains to be seen how this transition will impact EV owners on the NJ Turnpike and whether similar exclusivity deals will become commonplace. Tesla’s efforts to provide charging solutions for all EVs reflect a commitment to sustainable transportation.
