A groundbreaking new energy project has launched in Haldimand County, Ontario, signaling a significant shift in how the province manages its electricity. The Hagersville Battery Energy Storage Park, a collaboration between Boralex and the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC), is now operational as the largest facility of its kind in Canada.
The facility is constructed using 334 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, innovative high-capacity lithium-ion battery systems that act as a massive reservoir for the provincial power grid. With the ability to store up to 1,200 MWh of electricity, these Megapacks can provide full power to the grid for four continuous hours during peak demand periods.
The Tesla Megapacks play a crucial role in addressing a key challenge in modern energy management – timing. As wind and solar power sources are intermittent, the grid often experiences fluctuations in power supply. These batteries are designed to absorb excess electricity during off-peak hours and release stored energy back into the grid when demand is high. This process helps stabilize the electrical system and reduces the reliance on costly gas-powered plants.
In addition to its technical achievements, the Hagersville project represents a significant economic success for the Six Nations community. As a co-developer, SNGRDC now manages a portfolio that positions it as the largest Indigenous holder of battery storage assets in North America. Local community participation was prioritized during the construction phase, with workers from the Six Nations community leading the primary civil works on the 30-acre site through A6N General Partnerships.
With the successful launch of the Hagersville site and another project in Lakeshore, Boralex has emerged as the leading battery storage operator in Canada. The partners are already planning a third project in Oxford County, which is set to commence construction soon. A formal grand opening for the Hagersville facility is scheduled for Spring 2026, illustrating the ongoing commitment to sustainable energy solutions and Indigenous partnership in the region.
