Tesla’s Robotaxi service is making waves in the transportation industry with its aggressive pricing strategy. A recent analysis comparing Tesla to rivals Waymo, Uber, and Lyft shows just how cheap Tesla’s rides are, even if it means longer wait times for passengers.
According to a report cited by The Verge, ride-hailing analytics app Obi analyzed over 94,000 trips in San Francisco between November 27, 2025, and January 1, 2026. The findings revealed that Tesla’s Robotaxi rides averaged just $8.17 per trip, significantly lower than Lyft’s $15.47 average and well below Waymo’s pricing.
On a per-distance basis, Tesla’s pricing was the lowest Obi has ever recorded at $1.99 per kilometer, compared to Waymo’s $5.72 per kilometer. This aggressive pricing strategy is reminiscent of Uber’s early days when subsidized fares were used to gain market share.
However, the cheap pricing comes with trade-offs, primarily longer wait times. Tesla’s Robotaxi service currently has the longest average wait time in the market at 15.32 minutes in San Francisco, compared to Waymo’s 5.74 minutes. This is partly due to Tesla operating a smaller fleet in San Francisco and Austin.
To address this issue, Tesla has been rapidly expanding its Robotaxi fleet by adding dozens of new vehicles in recent weeks. Despite not having permits for fully driverless operations in California, Tesla has started offering fully unsupervised rides in Austin.
Consumer sentiment towards robotaxis is also shifting, with a survey by Obi showing an increase in comfort levels from 35% to 63% compared to the previous year. Cost remains a concern, but long-term confidence in autonomy is rising, with over half of respondents believing robotaxis will be safer than human drivers within five years.
Overall, Tesla’s aggressive pricing strategy is a sign of the upcoming price war in the robotaxi industry, indicating the company’s willingness to invest heavily to dominate the market. Stay tuned as Tesla continues to revolutionize the transportation industry with its Robotaxi service.
