Tesla has reached a major milestone in the production of its highly anticipated Semi truck. The company announced that the first Semi has officially rolled off its new high-volume production line in Nevada, marking a significant shift from limited pilot builds to industrial-scale manufacturing.
The production of the Tesla Semi is taking place at a dedicated 1.7 million-square-foot facility located next to Gigafactory Nevada. The company has set ambitious goals for production, with plans to ramp up throughout the remainder of 2026 and ultimately produce 50,000 units annually. This would represent nearly 20 per cent of the entire North American Class 8 truck market.
The 2026 production model of the Tesla Semi comes with several significant updates compared to the early units delivered to PepsiCo in 2022. One of the key changes is a reduction in weight by approximately 1,000 pounds, achieved through the shift to a 48V low-voltage architecture and the use of 4680 battery cells. These updates, combined with a 7 per cent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency, allow the Semi to maintain its impressive 500-mile range while carrying a full 82,000-pound gross combination weight.
Drivers will also notice improvements in handling and precision thanks to the shift from hydraulic to fully electric steering assist. The Semi remains powered by three independent motors on the rear axles, providing roughly three times the power of a typical diesel semi.
In terms of charging, the production units are fully compatible with 1.2-megawatt Megachargers, capable of recovering 60 per cent of the battery’s range in just 30 minutes. Tesla is partnering with Pilot Flying J to build a nationwide Megacharger network, with the first sites expected to open along major freight corridors this summer.
While the purchase price of the Tesla Semi is estimated at just under $300,000, the high fuel costs and government incentives are making the total cost of ownership increasingly attractive for fleet operators such as Walmart, Costco, and DHL. With its impressive range, power, and charging capabilities, the Tesla Semi is poised to revolutionize the transportation industry and pave the way for a greener future.
