Tesla has achieved a significant milestone in its autonomous vehicle production with the first Cybercab units now rolling off the assembly line, driving themselves. In a video shared by CEO Elon Musk, a production-ready Cybercab was captured navigating its way out of the Gigafactory Texas facility completely autonomously.
The video showcases the sleek gold-finished Cybercab making its way out of the factory exit without the need for a steering wheel, pedals, or manual driving controls. This reflects Tesla’s ultimate goal of creating a fully autonomous transportation network.
Elon Musk and Tesla engineers took to social media to celebrate this production milestone. Yun-Ta Tsai from Tesla’s AI team commended the factory, vehicle program, software, and systems teams for their efforts in achieving this milestone. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Director of Autopilot Software, mentioned that these vehicles will soon be hitting the roads in Austin to kickstart robotaxi service.
While this isn’t the first time Tesla has showcased self-driving vehicles exiting factories, it’s particularly exciting when it involves the purpose-built Cybercab designed specifically for autonomous driving.
This significant moment signifies the transition of the Cybercab from a concept vehicle to an active production model at Giga Texas. Tesla is gearing up to deploy these dedicated autonomous vehicles for public road testing and eventually for commercial service.
Overall, this achievement demonstrates Tesla’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of autonomous driving technology and bringing us closer to a future where self-driving vehicles are the norm. The Cybercab’s autonomous capabilities are a significant step towards revolutionizing the way we travel and showcasing the potential of fully autonomous transportation.
