Tesla App Update Unveils New Trailer Light Test Feature

With Tesla constantly enhancing the functionality of its vehicles, a recent update to the official mobile app has uncovered a hidden feature that will simplify towing tasks. In the latest app version 4.55.5, Tesla included a new text string hinting at an upcoming capability that will enable owners to test their trailer lights directly from their smartphones.

Addressing a Common Towing Challenge

For individuals who frequently tow trailers such as boats, campers, or utility trailers, conducting a pre-trip light check can be a frustrating task. Ensuring that the trailer’s brake lights, running lights, and turn signals are properly synchronized with the tow vehicle is not only a safety measure but also a legal requirement.

In the past, this process typically required two individuals: one in the driver’s seat activating the brake pedal and blinkers, while the other stood behind the trailer to verify proper illumination. For solo drivers, this task became even more challenging, often resulting in incomplete checks or cumbersome setups to inspect all trailer lights.

By integrating a trailer light test feature into the Tesla app, owners will soon be able to conveniently test their trailer lights by simply standing behind their trailer with their smartphone.

This innovation may have been inspired by the testing features already present in the Tesla Semi, which allow truck owners to conduct pre-trip checks efficiently.

The forthcoming feature was uncovered by examining the source code of Tesla app version 4.55.5. A specific phrase in the app named MOBILE_APP_FEATURE_TRAILER_LIGHT_TEST was identified by @Tesla_App_iOS.

Tesla frequently updates its mobile app to pave the way for future vehicle features. These backend code hints serve as reliable indicators of what the engineering team is working on behind the scenes.

Integration into Vehicle Interface

Although a dedicated trailer light testing mode is not yet available in Tow Mode, it is likely that Tesla will eventually incorporate this feature into the vehicle’s user interface as well.

With the Cybertruck expanding Tesla’s reach into the heavy-duty towing market, and considering the capabilities of the Model X and Model Y, introducing user-friendly towing features is a logical progression for the software team.
