SpaceX’s Starlink has evolved from a mere satellite internet experiment to a powerful growth engine, with global web traffic flowing through the service more than doubling in 2025. Cloudflare’s data reveals that Starlink’s traffic surged as the service expanded into new markets, with immediate spikes observed in internet traffic whenever Starlink became available in new regions. In some cases, such as in Botswana, traffic jumped by nearly 300% after the launch.
This growth aligns with Starlink’s rapidly expanding footprint, as the service now boasts over eight million active users across more than 150 countries and territories. This is a significant increase from just four million users in September 2024. Powered by a constellation of more than 9,000 low-Earth orbit satellites, Starlink’s network is expected to surpass 10,000 satellites by early 2026.
In addition to expanding coverage, Starlink has significantly improved network speeds, increasing median peak-hour speeds by over 50% in 2025. This enhancement has driven adoption in both urban and remote areas, with over 20 airlines adopting or planning to use Starlink to offer high-speed Wi-Fi on board.
Elon Musk recently confirmed that Starlink is SpaceX’s largest revenue source, surpassing even its launch business. This revenue growth is a key factor in SpaceX’s reported preparation for an IPO as early as next year, potentially one of the largest IPOs in history.
Looking ahead, SpaceX is gearing up to launch next-generation Starlink V3 satellites in late 2026. These larger satellites are expected to exponentially expand network capacity. Musk has also hinted at more ambitious plans, including the possibility of putting AI data centers in orbit as Starlink and Starship technologies advance.
With web traffic doubling, capacity upgrades underway, and plans for a satellite-to-cellular service in the pipeline, Starlink’s growth shows no signs of slowing down. As competitors like Amazon’s Leo and China’s Spacesail struggle to catch up, SpaceX’s satellite internet network is poised to become a crucial pillar of the company’s future.
