SpaceX is reportedly working on a new, rugged version of its portable satellite internet hardware, as revealed by a recent discovery in the latest Starlink software code. The reference to a “MINI1_RUGGED_PROD1” model was found hidden within the code, suggesting a heavy-duty design capable of withstanding harsh weather and physical conditions.
The term “rugged” implies that this new hardware is intended for industrial, commercial, or military use, where standard consumer gear may not hold up. The inclusion of “prod1” indicates that the device has advanced to the production stage, rather than remaining a mere concept.
Oleg Kutkov, a Ukrainian communications hardware specialist, noted that the upcoming hardware features slightly lower Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) per channel and a different Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) value compared to the standard portable version. Additionally, the rugged unit includes an extra telemetry stream for specialized purposes, aligning with potential heavy industrial or defense applications.
This development comes just over a year after SpaceX hinted to its distributors about a new version of the compact dish being in the works. With this new rugged model on the horizon, SpaceX is expanding its offerings to cater to a wider range of users with varying needs and requirements.
