Lufthansa Group Partners with SpaceX’s Starlink for High-Speed In-Flight Internet
Lufthansa Group has recently announced a groundbreaking partnership with SpaceX that will see Starlink technology installed across its entire fleet of approximately 850 aircraft. This collaboration will make Lufthansa the largest airline group in Europe to implement Starlink-powered in-flight internet on such a large scale.
The installation process is set to commence in the second half of 2026, with all aircraft expected to be equipped with Starlink by 2029. This move signals a significant step forward in providing passengers with high-speed internet access while in the air.
The new high-speed Wi-Fi service will be available across all travel classes and will be free of charge for Lufthansa status customers and Travel ID users. This means that passengers will be able to enjoy seamless internet connectivity for streaming, cloud-based work, and other bandwidth-heavy applications during their flights.
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “Connectivity on board plays an important role today, and with Starlink, we are not only investing in the best product on the market, but also in the satisfaction of our passengers.”
Previously, Lufthansa Group airlines relied on Deutsche Telekom’s LTE-based offering for in-flight internet. However, the transition to Starlink underscores the rapid adoption of this cutting-edge technology in the aviation sector. Major carriers like Emirates and flydubai have already signed deals to provide free Starlink-powered Wi-Fi to passengers, while British Airways is set to introduce complimentary service this year.
In North America, Alaska Airlines is fast-tracking Starlink deployment across its fleet following successful trials. Qatar Airways has quietly become Starlink’s largest airline partner, operating the world’s biggest Starlink-equipped widebody fleet. With Lufthansa now joining this growing list of partners, Starlink is solidifying its position as the leading provider of next-generation in-flight connectivity.
SpaceX has indicated that free Wi-Fi is likely to remain a standard feature for airlines partnering with Starlink. This shift from a paid perk to a standard offering reflects a commitment to providing passengers with faster, more reliable internet access without the need for additional charges.
