Ferrari, known for producing some of the fastest cars in the world, has finally joined the electric vehicle (EV) party with the unveiling of the all-electric Luce. This move comes after a long period of hesitation and delay, during which other automakers have either scaled back their EV ambitions or canceled battery-powered models.
The Luce was revealed at the Vela di Calatrava in Rome, a massive sporting complex, and has generated a significant amount of buzz and excitement in the automotive world. Designed with help from LoveFrom, a design firm led by renowned Apple designer Jony Ive and his partner Marc Newson, the Luce looks more like something Apple would create rather than a traditional Ferrari.
The exterior of the Luce is sleek and rounded, reminiscent of Apple’s design aesthetic. The interior features a myriad of buttons, knobs, and switches, with screens displaying rounded corners similar to those found on iPhones and iPads. The central display can rotate towards either the driver or passenger, and includes a palm rest for easy interaction with controls.
Under the hood, the Luce is powered by four electric motors producing a combined 1,035 horsepower. The front motors generate 282 hp, while the rear motors produce 835 hp, resulting in impressive acceleration times of 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds and 0-124mph in 6.8 seconds. The Luce is equipped with a 122kWh battery pack, providing an estimated range of 310 miles on the EPA cycle.
Despite being the heaviest Ferrari ever made, the Luce boasts a unique design that prioritizes aerodynamics and efficiency. The car’s architecture allows for fast DC charging, with a maximum charging rate of 350kW. Priced at $640,000 (€550,000), the Luce represents a significant step for Ferrari into the world of electric vehicles.
