Tesla Discontinues International Orders for Model S and Model X
Tesla has made a significant move towards phasing out its older models, the Model S and Model X, by discontinuing international orders for these vehicles. These flagship sedan and SUV models have been a part of Tesla’s lineup for a long time, but they make up a small fraction of the company’s overall sales. CEO Elon Musk has previously acknowledged that the decision to continue producing and selling these models was driven by sentimental reasons.
Earlier this year, there were discussions about ending production of the Model S and Model X, but Tesla’s Lars Moravy mentioned that the vehicles were slated for updates in 2025. However, the changes introduced were minimal, leading some to speculate that Tesla might be moving on from these models. Despite expectations for significant overhauls, the changes were minor and did not bring about substantial improvements.
Customers in Europe are now unable to place new orders for the Model S and Model X. When attempting to order these vehicles on Tesla’s website, users are directed to available inventory instead of the Design Studio where custom configurations can be made. This shift suggests that Tesla may no longer produce enough Model S and Model X units to justify the cost of shipping custom orders internationally.
It is possible that Tesla will produce random configurations of these models and send them overseas periodically, allowing them to sell before restocking inventory. Alternatively, the decision to end international orders could indicate that Tesla is considering phasing out these models entirely. While it may not happen in the immediate future, the low sales volume of the Model S and Model X could prompt Tesla to discontinue these models in the long run.
