Elon Musk Speaks Out After Jury Decision in OpenAI Lawsuit
Elon Musk recently spoke out after the jury decision to throw out the case against OpenAI and Sam Altman. The Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI frontman expressed his disappointment with the ruling and announced plans to appeal the decision.
The lawsuit, filed by Musk in 2024, accused Altman and Greg Brockman of breaching OpenAI’s original nonprofit mission. Musk alleged that the co-founders had shifted the organization towards a for-profit model, enriched themselves through partnerships, and betrayed founding agreements.
In a post on X, Musk emphasized that the judge and jury had dismissed the case on a statute-of-limitations technicality, rather than ruling on the substantive claims. He stated that Altman and Brockman had enriched themselves by “stealing a charity” and vowed to appeal the ruling to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Musk’s decision to appeal the ruling is based on his belief that allowing such actions to go unchecked sets a dangerous precedent. He stressed that OpenAI was founded to benefit humanity and that the actions of Altman and Brockman were detrimental to charitable giving in America.
The jury’s verdict found that Musk’s claims were filed outside California’s statute of limitations, leading to the dismissal of the case by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers. OpenAI welcomed the outcome as vindication, while Musk’s legal team indicated plans to appeal.
The trial, which featured testimony from Musk, Altman, Brockman, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and others, highlighted divisions in Silicon Valley over the direction of AI development. Musk has long warned about the dangers of profit-driven AI development and emphasized the importance of OpenAI’s original open, safety-focused charter.
Musk’s appeal could have implications for OpenAI’s valuation and IPO ambitions, with supporters applauding his defense of nonprofit integrity and critics questioning his motives. The case has raised important questions about trust, governance, and mission drift in the AI industry, with Musk’s determination to continue the fight suggesting that this chapter is far from over.
