The Flemish government is currently in the process of reviewing the implementation of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system in Belgium. This decision comes after a formal inquiry was submitted to Minister-President Matthias Diependaele, following the recent approval of the technology in the Netherlands.
The Dutch vehicle authority RDW granted the first European type approval for Tesla FSD Supervised on April 10, 2026. While the approval is currently only valid in the Netherlands, it has paved the way for other EU member states to recognize the system through mutual recognition.
Belgian Tesla enthusiast and advocate, Jonas DM, has been pushing for the Flemish government to expedite the recognition process so that local Tesla owners can benefit from this advanced driver assistance system. In response to his request, the Cabinet of the Minister-President acknowledged the message and confirmed that internal discussions are underway.
The government is currently coordinating with relevant departments to assess the technical RDW approval. If Flanders decides to recognize the Dutch type approval, Belgium could potentially see a rollout of the software as early as this summer, making it one of the next European markets to adopt this cutting-edge technology.
The Dutch RDW approval, version 2026.3.6, followed 18 months of rigorous testing, including 1.6 million kilometres of data from European roads. While the system allows for hands-off driving under specific conditions, it is classified as a Level 2 assistant, meaning the driver must remain fully attentive and legally responsible at all times.
Overall, the potential integration of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system in Belgium is an exciting development that could revolutionize the way we think about autonomous driving technology. As discussions continue within the Flemish government, it will be interesting to see how this innovative technology is adopted and implemented in the coming months.
