The Tesla Model Y: Europe’s Electric Car Leader in 2025
In 2025, the Tesla Model Y emerged as Europe’s most popular electric car, outperforming all other EV models despite facing challenges such as production transitions, increased competition, and anti-Elon Musk sentiments.
According to data from JATO Dynamics reported by Swedish outlet Allt om Elbil, the Tesla Model Y secured 149,805 registrations across Europe, claiming the top spot among electric car models in the region.
Even amid a 28% year-over-year decline in registrations, the Model Y maintained its dominance, surpassing its closest competitor by over 50,000 units. The Skoda Elroq took second place with 93,870 registrations, followed by the Tesla Model 3 at 85,393 units and the Renault 5 at 85,101 registrations.
Other notable performers included the Volkswagen ID.4, ID.3, and ID.7, as well as the BMW iX1 and Kia EV3, many of which experienced significant growth following their partial-year launches in 2024.
Despite these achievements, Volkswagen managed to overtake Tesla as the top-selling EV brand in Europe for 2025, delivering 274,278 electric cars compared to Tesla’s 236,357 units. JATO Dynamics attributed Volkswagen’s success to the popularity of models like the ID.7, highlighting the intense competition Tesla faces from both traditional European automakers and emerging Chinese competitors.
Nevertheless, the Tesla Model Y’s commanding lead reaffirms its position as a dominant player in Europe’s evolving EV market, showcasing its enduring appeal and performance amidst a competitive landscape and shifting industry dynamics.
