Tesla India recently unveiled the new Model Y L at launch events held at its flagship Experience Centres in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Priced at ₹61.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Model Y L is a long-wheelbase version of Tesla’s popular SUV, featuring a 150 mm longer wheelbase and a redesigned three-row interior with individual captain seats in the second row, catering to the Indian market’s preference for spacious family vehicles. The electric SUV comes standard with All-Wheel Drive and offers a claimed range of 681 km (WLTP).
Customers can now view the Model Y L in stores, with the first customer deliveries set to begin in June. Tesla’s entry into the Indian market has been a long process, involving regulatory negotiations and the establishment of Experience Centres in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Gurugram. The company has also been actively expanding its charging infrastructure in the country, with V4 Supercharger stations already operational in Mumbai and Delhi, offering 250 kW peak charging speeds that can add up to 275 km of range in just 15 minutes.
The launch event was themed “Building a World of Amazing Abundance,” reflecting Tesla’s updated global mission statement, which now includes a broader focus on sustainable energy, robotics, and autonomous transport. The company’s move into India aligns with the country’s push for electric vehicles, with the government introducing a new EV policy in 2024 that incentivizes companies to commit to local manufacturing. Tesla’s presence in India signifies a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions in the region.
