Tesla recently unveiled a new video on its YouTube channel titled Outage Protection, highlighting the capabilities of its Powerwall battery system in helping homeowners prepare for extreme weather and power outages. The video showcases a feature called Storm Watch, which automatically charges the Powerwall to 100% when severe weather is forecasted in the user’s area.
Storm Watch utilizes data from regional weather services, such as the National Weather Service in the U.S., to predict when storms might impact the power grid. This proactive approach ensures that the Powerwall is fully charged before a storm hits, providing peace of mind to users who may face outages lasting from a few seconds to several days.
According to a Tesla engineer featured in the video, Storm Watch was triggered for 2.8 million weather events over the past year. Most customers are alerted to power outages through push notifications from the Tesla app, rather than realizing it on their own.
The Tesla app displays a banner when Storm Watch is active, allowing users to access storm details, monitor charging progress, and receive notifications when their Powerwall is fully charged. For those who prefer to plan ahead, Tesla also offers scheduled charging to prepare for forecasted events.
In the event of cell network disruptions, users can still monitor their Powerwall at home through a local offline monitoring feature, which keeps the app connected via the home’s Wi-Fi router.
Tesla emphasizes that Powerwall users can rely on the system to provide power for essential needs like lighting, refrigeration, and heating or cooling during outages. The video demonstrates how Storm Watch and other features of the Powerwall ensure that homeowners are well-prepared for unexpected disruptions in power supply.
