The Tesla Model Y has made history in Norway by becoming the first car to surpass 100,000 new registrations, solidifying its status as a popular vehicle both in the country and around the world. According to data from the Norwegian outlet Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken (OFV), as of May 20, there have been 100,224 units of the electric SUV registered in Norway.
This milestone is particularly impressive considering that the Model Y only started deliveries in August 2021. Since then, it has quickly become a staple on Norwegian roads, with approximately one in every 29 passenger cars now being a Model Y.
Geir Inge Stokke, the Managing Director of OFV, described the achievement as “remarkable,” noting that few single models have gained such rapid traction in the market. He highlighted the Model Y’s success as a testament to Norway’s aggressive push towards electrification, with 87.6% of units being privately registered and the remaining 12.4% on company plates.
In terms of demographics, typical Model Y drivers in Norway are men in their early 40s, with the average registered user age being 44. The vehicle’s popularity extends beyond major cities, with strong adoption in urban centers with robust charging infrastructure.
Tesla has seen significant sales momentum with the Model Y in Norway, with registrations more than doubling from 2021 to 2023. In 2025, the company recorded its strongest year yet with 27,621 registrations, and 2026 is already off to a strong start with 7,036 registrations.
Globally, Tesla has achieved immense success with the Model Y, becoming the best-selling car in the world three times and dominating EV sales in multiple countries. The vehicle’s journey from newcomer to icon mirrors Norway’s broader success story in sustainable mobility, with the country setting global benchmarks for electric vehicle adoption.
The Tesla Model Y serves as a prime example of how quickly change can happen when the right conditions align. Its popularity in Norway and around the world underscores the growing demand for electric vehicles and the shift towards sustainable transportation options.
