Tesla has recently introduced a new Model Y trim level in China that has sparked a lot of excitement among electric vehicle enthusiasts. The new Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive comes at a bargain price of 288,500 yuan ($40,500), making it an attractive option for potential buyers. What sets this trim level apart is not just its affordability, but also its impressive range rating.
The Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive offers a remarkable range of 821 kilometers on the CLTC scale, which translates to approximately 510 miles. This impressive range is made possible by the vehicle’s 78.4 kWh CATL battery. When converted to real-world range, the 821-kilometer rating equates to about 357 miles on the EPA scale, surpassing the Long Range All-Wheel-Drive configuration available in the U.S.
Tesla has diversified its Model Y lineup in China, offering various trim levels to cater to different preferences. In addition to the Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive, Tesla also introduced a new Model Y L configuration in the Chinese market. This variant features a slightly longer wheelbase and additional interior features like extended thigh legrests and captain’s chairs with armrests.
While Tesla has not confirmed if the Premium Rear-Wheel-Drive option of the Model Y will be available in the U.S., the company has already launched four configurations of the all-electric crossover in the market. With the introduction of new Standard offerings, Tesla aims to simplify its lineup and cater to a wider range of customers. There is a possibility that the Model Y L could be introduced in the U.S. sometime next year, although CEO Elon Musk has stated that it is not guaranteed.
Despite customer demand for larger vehicles, Tesla seems more focused on advancing its self-driving technology in the U.S. The company has hinted at the potential development of a smaller Cyber SUV, but for now, it appears that larger vehicles may not be a top priority. As Tesla continues to innovate and expand its lineup, we can expect to see exciting developments in the electric vehicle market.
