SpaceX and Starlink are joining forces to provide support to those impacted by the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area. In a heartwarming gesture, the companies are offering one month of free internet service to residents in the affected regions to aid in the recovery efforts.
The initiative, aimed at assisting those in wildfire-affected areas, was announced in an email sent to Starlink customers. Residents with service addresses within the impacted regions are eligible to reactivate their Starlink service, even if they no longer have their Starlink kit or if it is not functioning. To activate the free service, customers simply need to sign in to their Starlink account, click on “Manage” under “Your Starlinks,” select “Activate Service,” and choose their plan.
In addition to the free month of service, Starlink has also applied a credit to accounts matching the amount of any previous service plan. However, customers should be aware that unused credits may expire. For more information and updates on Starlink’s wildfire response efforts, customers can visit the Starlink Help Center or follow @Starlink on social media.
As of January 9, 2025, Los Angeles is facing multiple destructive wildfires, with the Palisades Fire being the most devastating. The fire has consumed over 19,000 acres, destroyed numerous structures, and tragically led to at least five reported fatalities. With over 130,000 residents under evacuation orders, the fires have spread to various neighborhoods, including Pacific Palisades, Hollywood Hills, and Altadena, fueled by dry conditions and strong Santa Ana winds.
Firefighters, numbering over 7,500, are bravely battling the blazes despite poor air quality, with some areas experiencing hazardous air conditions. In a show of solidarity, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX will be providing free Starlink terminals to the affected areas in LA, further aiding in communication and connectivity during this challenging time.

As the recovery efforts continue, the generosity and assistance provided by these companies are sure to make a meaningful impact on those in need.
