Mercedes-Benz made a strategic decision a year ago to halt its EQ lineup of electric vehicles in the US due to declining customer demand and the removal of federal incentives. The first-generation EVs were put on hold to reassess the market and make improvements.
However, in January, Mercedes surprised everyone by reintroducing the EQS brand in the US. The sedan, known for its unique jelly-bean shape that prioritizes aerodynamics, is making a comeback with some impressive updates. The 2027 EQS is set to hit US dealerships in the latter half of 2026.
One of the most striking features of the new EQS is its estimated range of 575 miles on the WLTP cycle. This impressive range is achieved through a new battery chemistry that combines silicon oxide with graphite for the anodes, allowing for a usable capacity of 122kWh. Mercedes has also reduced its use of cobalt, a material associated with human rights abuses in mining.
Charging capabilities have also been enhanced with the new EQS. The sedan now operates on an 800-volt architecture, enabling 350 kW DC fast charging that can add 200 miles of range in just 10 minutes. The intelligent control system also optimizes charging at 400-volt stations, allowing for efficient energy distribution.
The introduction of steer-by-wire technology is a bold move by Mercedes. This electronic steering system offers improved maneuverability and comfort, although there are concerns about latency issues. Mercedes assures that the system has been rigorously tested for safety. The inclusion of a new steering yoke may attract enthusiasts looking for a unique driving experience.
The exterior design of the EQS remains distinctive, with its one-bow shape contributing to an industry-leading drag coefficient of 0.20. The sedan also features refined exterior mirrors for further aerodynamic optimization. Regenerative braking power has been increased by a third to 385kW.
Inside, the EQS boasts advanced AI integration through Mercedes’ MB.OS operating system. The standard 55-inch Hyperscreen offers a user-friendly interface with AI-powered features and over-the-air software updates. The system learns user preferences to provide a personalized experience.
Mercedes plans to offer the EQS in several packages, including the EQS 450+, EQS 500 4MATIC, and EQS 580 4MATIC. Each model offers unique driving experiences, with the latter two featuring all-wheel drive and enhanced regenerative braking.
Overall, the new EQS is set to elevate Mercedes’ EV lineup in the US market. With a focus on innovation, range, charging capabilities, and advanced technology, the EQS represents a significant step forward for the luxury automaker. Mercedes is committed to introducing more EVs in the coming years, solidifying its position in the electric vehicle market.
