The U.S. EV charging network Ionna is rapidly expanding its infrastructure as it aims to fulfill its commitment of installing tens of thousands of electric vehicle chargers within the next five years.
In a recent press release, Ionna announced its transition from public beta to a full-scale national release after successfully opening its first location and completing a testing program in 2024.
The testing program involved over 4,400 charging sessions with a variety of EV models, delivering nearly 63,000 kwh of energy. Ionna emphasized that the goal was to rigorously test the network’s capabilities before focusing on its expansion.
Initially supported by seven automakers, including BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, Ionna welcomed Toyota to its network in 2024. Positioned as a competitor to the Tesla Supercharger network, Ionna has gained momentum amidst the fluctuating expansion plans of the Supercharger network.
With over 100 contracted charging sites nationwide, Ionna recently announced new locations in Houston, Texas; Abilene, Kansas; and Wilcox, Arizona, in addition to the six sites already under construction. The network is introducing new tech features such as expanded Plug & Charge compatibility and Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology for added convenience.
The first Ionna location is located in Apex, N.C., transformed from a traditional gas station into a modern “Rechargery.”
Ionna aims to have 1,000 new charging bays operational by the end of the year, working towards its goal of 30,000 bays by 2030 set in 2023. The term “bays” refers to charging spots, with each spot accommodating multiple connectors, which can be CCS or NACS.
