General Motors has announced plans to introduce Google’s Gemini AI assistant to approximately four million vehicles across the United States. The upgrade will be available for model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles that come equipped with Google built-in. GM will be rolling out the AI update through over-the-air software updates for its infotainment system over the course of several months.
This deployment of Gemini by GM is said to be one of the largest in the industry. The company promises that customers will experience an enhanced AI assistant that is smarter and more intuitive than the current Google Assistant, with ongoing improvements over time. The Gemini assistant will be capable of performing a variety of tasks such as sending messages, providing navigation assistance, suggesting music, and more. Users can expect a more natural and conversational experience, allowing for seamless interactions without the need to remember specific commands. Initially available in US English, GM plans to expand Gemini to additional markets and languages in the future.
In addition to the Gemini update, GM also announced a significant milestone for its Super Cruise advanced driver-assist system. Nearly 750,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles have collectively driven one billion hands-free miles. While Super Cruise does not offer full autonomy, it allows drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel on compatible roads in the US and Canada. This achievement demonstrates GM’s commitment to advancing driver-assist technologies and competing with industry rivals like Tesla.
With the integration of Google’s Gemini AI assistant and the success of the Super Cruise system, General Motors continues to innovate and enhance the driving experience for its customers. The company’s focus on incorporating cutting-edge technology into its vehicles positions GM as a key player in the automotive industry’s evolution towards safer and more connected vehicles.
