Ford Ships New NACS Adapter for Tesla Supercharger Stations
Ford has started shipping a new North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter to customers in order to facilitate access to Tesla Supercharger stations more efficiently.
The new NACS adapter, produced by Lectron, is being distributed alongside the existing Tesla design. It boasts the same specifications as the Tesla-provided adapters, rated at 500 amps and 1,000 volts, but with a slightly different appearance.
The new adapters are not meant to replace the original design that Ford began shipping in March. They are an “incremental” addition to expedite the distribution of adapters to customers, as confirmed by the automaker to Green Car Reports. Customers in line for an adapter may receive either the Lectron adapter or the previous design.
Ford initially offered one free adapter per vehicle to all new and existing EV customers who enrolled in its charging aggregator by June 30. Adapters are available for purchase at $230, with a separate process in place for fleet customers through Ford Pro.
The new adapter release is unrelated to Ford’s replacement program for a specific batch of Tesla-sourced adapters that could affect charging speeds. The automaker has advised certain customers to refrain from using the affected adapters until replacements are shipped.
Last year, Ford led the industry in transitioning to the Tesla charge port, with other major US automakers like GM and Rivian following suit. Volvo and Polestar have also announced plans to start shipping adapters to customers this week.
