China’s car industry continues to push the boundaries of innovation with the release of amphibious SUVs to the masses. Chery, a prominent automaker, has introduced the Jetour G700 plug-in hybrid, boasting the ability to float like a boat in addition to its luxurious features. What sets this SUV apart is its built-in propellers that can be activated in case of an emergency, making it a versatile and unique vehicle in the market.
The emergence of China’s electrified cars has put them in a league of their own, surpassing American models with cutting-edge technology and features. However, distinguishing between practical features and gimmicks has become increasingly challenging in the automotive industry. Three years ago, BYD’s YangWang U8 luxury SUV made waves for its ability to float in water for a limited time, but Chery has taken it a step further with the Jetour G700’s boat-like capabilities.
The Ark Edition of the Jetour G700 is equipped with a water-crossing feature that is designed for emergency situations such as flash floods. Despite its practical purpose, the SUV’s boating abilities have become a popular novelty, showcased by Chery in various demonstrations. The advanced gyroscopic stability system ensures that the vehicle remains level on the water, as demonstrated during a recent publicity stunt crossing the Minjiang River in just 10 minutes without any water seepage.
In terms of performance, the Jetour G700 is comparable in size to a Lexus GX but offers a vastly different driving experience. Powered by a 2.0-liter gas engine and two electric motors producing a combined 892 horsepower and 837 pound-feet of torque, this plug-in SUV delivers impressive power and acceleration. Additionally, three locking differentials enhance its off-road capabilities.
The SUV features a substantial 34.1-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack supplied by CATL, providing an electric range of up to 62 miles on the WLTC procedure. When combined with a full tank of gas, the Jetour G700 offers a total driving range of up to 620 miles, making it suitable for long journeys. Fast charging is also possible, with the battery pack capable of accepting up to 170 kilowatts of power, thanks to its 800-volt nominal voltage.
Overall, the Chery Jetour G700 sets a new standard for amphibious SUVs with its unique combination of luxury, performance, and innovative features. As China’s car industry continues to evolve, we can expect to see more groundbreaking vehicles that challenge traditional norms and redefine the driving experience for consumers worldwide.
