Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology has once again proven its superiority, this time earning praise from a rival automaker. Hyundai Motor recently conducted an internal evaluation of various autonomous driving systems, with Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) emerging as the clear winner. Scoring an impressive 90 out of 100 for technological sophistication, Tesla’s autonomous driving stack outperformed competitors such as Huawei, Mobileye, Momenta, and even Hyundai’s own in-house system.
In contrast, Hyundai’s internally developed Atria AI received a disappointing score of 25 out of 100 in the same evaluation. The test, conducted by Hyundai’s Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) division, used the respected Waymo Open Dataset as a benchmark. This result has prompted a strategic rethink within Hyundai, with recent leadership changes indicating a shift towards exploring partnerships with companies like Nvidia, which recently unveiled its own autonomous driving platform, Alpamayo.
Hyundai’s Atria AI researchers have reportedly been reassigned to projects involving Nvidia’s Alpamayo models, suggesting a potential transition away from Atria AI towards Nvidia’s advanced technology. Alpamayo boasts over 10 billion parameters and training data spanning more than 2,500 cities, indicating a significant leap in autonomous driving capabilities.
While Hyundai’s collaboration with Alpamayo is still in its early stages, industry insiders speculate that the automaker may eventually phase out Atria AI in favor of Nvidia’s technology. This shift underscores the industry-wide acknowledgment of Tesla’s leadership in the autonomous driving space. Tesla’s latest FSD builds have already demonstrated remarkable confidence, enabling drivers to engage in tasks like texting behind the wheel under specific conditions. Moreover, Tesla’s internal models have facilitated fully unsupervised Robotaxi rides in Austin, showcasing the company’s advanced capabilities in autonomous driving.
Hyundai’s internal evaluation results serve as a tacit confirmation of Tesla’s dominance in camera-only autonomous driving technology, indicating that competitors are closely observing and learning from Tesla’s approach. As Tesla continues to push the boundaries of autonomous driving innovation, the industry landscape is evolving rapidly, with companies like Hyundai seeking to align themselves with cutting-edge technologies to stay competitive in the market.
