Tesla has recently made updates to its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Transfer Program, providing more clarity on eligibility and timelines for taking advantage of this offer. The program allows eligible owners to transfer their FSD from an existing vehicle to a newly purchased Tesla, but with a limited window of opportunity.
According to the revised information on Tesla’s website, customers who take delivery of a new Tesla vehicle between April 24, 2025, and March 31, 2026, may qualify for transferring their Full Self-Driving (FSD) (Supervised) from their current vehicle to the new one. This deadline of March 31, 2026, aligns with Tesla’s recent decision to end free FSD transfers by that date.
It’s important to note that the transfer is a one-way move, meaning that only the new vehicle will have access to FSD after the transfer. Owners who wish to have FSD on both vehicles will need to purchase it again for the new car.
Eligibility requirements for the program are strict. Customers must have their new vehicle delivered within the specified date range, be the legal owner and registrant of the current vehicle with FSD purchased outright, and have both vehicles on the same Tesla Account. FSD will be removed from the old vehicle approximately 48 hours after the delivery of the new one.
There are also exclusions to the program. FSD cannot be transferred from a Model Y Launch Series or a vehicle under an active lease, and business, commercial, and pre-owned vehicle orders are not eligible. Vehicles with pending cancellations, buyback requests, or delinquent balances are also excluded.
These changes come at a significant time for Tesla’s driver-assistance strategy. Elon Musk recently announced that Tesla will no longer sell Full Self-Driving as a one-time purchase after February 14, moving to a subscription-only model. Currently, FSD costs $8,000 upfront in the U.S. or $99 per month ($999 per year) via subscription.
For Tesla owners looking to upgrade their vehicles, the message is clear: if you want to retain your FSD license without subscribing again, the clock is ticking. Make sure to take advantage of the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Transfer Program before the March 31, 2026 deadline to transfer your FSD to your new Tesla.
