The Boring Company, Elon Musk’s tunneling startup, has been exploring the possibility of creating a tunnel system that would connect Reno to Tesla Gigafactory Nevada. This initiative comes in response to the growing traffic congestion and increasing number of accidents along Interstate 80. The early-stage feasibility work for this project was funded by the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), a nonprofit organization dedicated to attracting and expanding businesses in the region.
According to documents obtained by Fortune, The Boring Company received $50,000 in funding to develop conceptual designs and a feasibility report for a tunnel that would run beneath a nine-mile stretch of highway leading to Gigafactory Nevada. This proposed tunnel is one of several transportation alternatives being considered to address the traffic challenges faced by the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, where major employers like Tesla and Panasonic are located.
In addition to The Boring Company’s tunnel project, Tesla and Panasonic have also supported a separate study for a commuter rail system that would utilize existing freight rail tracks alongside Interstate 80. While details about the potential tunnel project, such as its length, cost, and the use of autonomous Teslas, have not been disclosed, the aim is to alleviate congestion and improve safety on the heavily traveled highway.
The need for transportation solutions in the area has become increasingly urgent, as data centers and new businesses have contributed to a significant increase in traffic along I-80. State transportation data indicates a doubling in the number of vehicles traveling certain sections of the highway during peak hours between January and July 2025. With approximately 22,000 employees commuting to the industrial park daily, safety concerns have also been raised, with accidents occurring almost every other day.
Bill Thomas, who oversees the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, expressed support for projects that could help mitigate traffic congestion and reduce accidents on Interstate 80. While he clarified that the commission is not directly involved in The Boring Company’s tunnel project, he acknowledged ongoing discussions about potential solutions to address the transportation challenges in the area.
Overall, the proposed tunnel system and other transportation initiatives aim to enhance connectivity, alleviate traffic congestion, and improve safety for employees commuting to the industrial center. As the feasibility studies progress and more details emerge, stakeholders will continue to explore innovative solutions to enhance transportation infrastructure in the region.
