Starlink has achieved a significant milestone in Kenya, breaking a new record for active users as SpaceX’s high-speed satellite internet service continues to gain traction not only in Africa but also globally. According to data from TechAfrica News, Starlink Internet Services Kenya reached 19,460 active users as of September 2025, marking the highest subscriber count since its local launch in July 2023.
This growth signifies a remarkable recovery for the company. Starlink had to temporarily halt new residential sign-ups in densely populated urban centers like Nairobi and Mombasa in December 2024 due to network congestion. This freeze lasted for seven months, resulting in a drop in active users to 17,066 by March 2025. However, after reopening registrations in June, subscriber numbers began to climb again, reaching 17,425 in June and then surging to 19,460 by September.
The resurgence underscores Kenya’s persistent demand for premium satellite broadband services, particularly in areas where fiber connectivity is limited or unreliable. It also highlights the network-capacity challenges that Starlink faces in high-density markets, which the company must address as adoption rates increase.
Despite facing competition from larger players like Safaricom, which reported over 815,000 fixed-internet connections during the same period, Starlink remains a valuable option in remote and peri-urban regions, where it often offers the most reliable service.
This new milestone comes as Starlink expands its presence globally. SpaceX recently announced that its satellite broadband service has surpassed eight million users across more than 150 countries and territories, with South Korea joining the network in December. Additionally, Starlink has been making significant inroads beyond traditional consumer markets, especially in aviation, where airlines are signing major deals for onboard Wi-Fi powered by Starlink.
Elon Musk revealed that Starlink is now SpaceX’s largest revenue source, with the company even venturing into physical retail by quietly opening its first dedicated Starlink stores in the U.S. to meet the growing customer demand.
With Kenya’s user numbers on the rise once again and Starlink’s global footprint expanding rapidly, SpaceX’s internet service seems poised for another year of substantial growth both in Africa and worldwide.
