Volvo has introduced a more budget-friendly version of the EX30 electric crossover in the United States. The new Single Motor Extended Range configuration comes at a price of $40,245, including destination charges, making it $6,000 cheaper than the previously available Twin Motor Performance variant.
This version is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor generating 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, utilizing the same 69-kilowatt-hour battery pack as its pricier counterpart. However, due to its lower weight of 3,913 pounds compared to 4,151 pounds, the Single Motor Extended Range EX30 can achieve a longer driving range of up to 261 miles on a single charge, surpassing the dual-motor variant by 8 miles.
Charging the vehicle to 80% from 10% takes approximately 28 minutes with a maximum charging power of 175 kilowatts. In terms of performance, the Single Motor Extended Range EX30 lags behind the dual-motor variant, with a slower acceleration time from zero to 60 mph at 5.1 seconds. The towing capacity remains at 2,000 pounds, with an optional retractable trailer hitch available for an additional cost of $1,830.
The Single Motor Extended Range EX30 comes in a single equipment level called Plus, featuring a panoramic roof, adaptive cruise control, a heat pump, dual-zone automatic climate control, 19-inch aluminum wheels, a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with Android Automotive OS, and various safety features. The Ultra version, offering additional features like a 360-degree camera with 3D view and lane-keeping assist, is exclusive to the Twin Motor Performance variant.
While the introduction of a more affordable version is positive news, the initial price point set for the EX30 in America was around $35,000 back in 2023. Due to software issues and trade disputes, the final price exceeded $45,000 upon its arrival this year. In comparison to the European entry-level EX30 with a smaller 51 kWh battery and a 209-mile WLTP-rated range, there is still room for improvement in terms of pricing and features for the U.S. market.
Overall, the Single Motor Extended Range EX30 remains the most cost-effective option available for American consumers interested in Volvo’s electric crossover lineup. As the industry continues to evolve, advancements in technology and pricing strategies may lead to further enhancements and options for electric vehicle enthusiasts.
