Audi has recently introduced plug-in hybrids to the engine lineup of the new A6, offering buyers two power output options of 295 and 362 horsepower. The Audi A6 E-Hybrid Quattro is available in both sedan and wagon body styles, with both versions boasting a WLTP range of 66 miles on a full charge.
The new Audi A6 E-Hybrid Quattro features a large 25.9 kWh battery, positioning it as one of the PHEVs with the most electric range currently on the market. This PHEV powertrain is shared with the A5 model, albeit with a slightly higher range. Despite having a usable battery capacity of 20.7 kWh, the A6 PHEV still achieves an impressive 66 miles of pure electric range according to WLTP standards.
While the A6’s electric range is commendable, it falls short compared to some PHEVs available in China, such as the Denza Z9, which boasts a 38.5 kWh battery and a claimed electric range of 125 miles. The A6 PHEV comes in two power variants, both utilizing a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower. The difference in power output between the two variants stems from the electric motor, capable of delivering up to 141 horsepower on its own.
The more powerful A6 PHEV variant accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds, while the lower-powered version achieves the same feat in 6 seconds. The vehicle can travel at speeds of up to 87 mph on electric power alone, making it suitable for highway commuting. When the gas engine is engaged, both variants can reach a top speed of 155 mph.
Charging the A6 PHEV’s battery from an 11-kilowatt three-phase charger takes approximately 2.5 hours, an improvement over the previous generation. However, some PHEVs offer faster charging options, with Audi’s A3 Sportback TFSIe featuring 50 kW DC fast charging capability.
In terms of handling, the A6 PHEV allows drivers to adjust the level of brake regeneration using steering wheel paddles, a feature not commonly found in other PHEVs. All variants come equipped with a seven-speed twin-clutch transmission that houses the electric motor, while rear-wheel steering is standard.
The Audi A6 E-Hybrid Quattro sedan starts at €65,800 in Germany, with the wagon variant priced at €68,300. The more powerful version of the A6 PHEV is priced at €75,050 for the sedan and €77,550 for the wagon. While the new A6 has not been officially unveiled in the United States, it remains to be seen if the PHEV models will be offered in the American market.
