Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to introduce a hands-free driver-assistance feature to its R1T pickup and R1S SUV in the coming weeks. This announcement was made by Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe during the company’s recent earnings call. The hands-free highway feature will be followed by a hands-free, eyes-free system for highway use in 2026.
The new hands-off driver-assistance system will utilize the Rivian Autonomy Platform, which is integrated into the second-generation R1T and R1S models. This platform includes a more powerful computer dedicated to driver assistance and an enhanced array of sensors, providing ample room for the development of more advanced automated driving features.
Once launched, Rivian’s hands-free system will allow drivers to automate steering, acceleration, and braking on certain highways. This feature will bring Rivian in line with other automakers offering similar convenience features, such as General Motors’ Super Cruise and Ford’s BlueCruise. However, it is important to note that drivers using these systems must still remain fully attentive and be prepared to take control if necessary.
In the future, Rivian plans to expand the functionality of its hands-free, eyes-free system to operate on more roads and under various conditions. This gradual expansion mirrors the approach taken by Mercedes-Benz with its Drive Pilot system, which currently allows for eyes-off driving in specific traffic situations on select highways in Nevada and California.
Systems that enable both hands-free and eyes-free driving, known as Level 3 systems, are relatively rare but represent the future direction of automated driving technology. Rivian’s introduction of such a system demonstrates its commitment to advancing the capabilities of electric vehicles and enhancing driver convenience and safety.
As Rivian continues to innovate in the electric vehicle space, the integration of hands-free and eyes-free driving features reflects the company’s dedication to providing cutting-edge technology to its customers. Stay tuned for more updates on Rivian’s advancements in automated driving technology.
