Ford recently introduced a prototype Mustang Mach-E electric SUV designed for NASCAR racing. This prototype, showcased at a preview event for the automaker’s upcoming 2025 motorsports initiatives, is a race-ready version of the Mach-E, featuring a blend of Mach-E styling and NASCAR components. This includes a carbon-fiber tub chassis and various elements from a current NASCAR Cup Series race car such as suspension, brakes, steering, and wheels, according to Ford.
The Mach-E electric race car is equipped with three motors delivering undisclosed power, powered by a 78-kWh battery pack. This falls between the Standard Range 72-kWh pack and the Extended Range 91-kWh pack available for the Mach-E road car.
Unlike traditional NASCAR vehicles with V-8 engines, the Cup Series features purpose-built race cars that are known for their noise and emissions. Ford’s Mach-E NASCAR prototype, as depicted in initial images, showcases its performance with plenty of tire smoke. NASCAR has yet to transition to hybrid technology, with plans delayed until at least 2027.

This adaptation aligns with NASCAR’s approach of designing cars that comply with the rule set while resembling consumer vehicles. The three-motor powertrain and 78-kWh battery pack mirror specifications previously outlined for an electric SUV prototype NASCAR introduced in 2023. This prototype featured sustainable bodywork constructed from flax, hinting at NASCAR’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
Although NASCAR has not confirmed plans for electric car adoption, leaked documents from 2022 suggested considerations for a separate electric series. In the meantime, Ford’s Mach-E NASCAR entry joins a lineup of Ford electric prototypes, demonstrating the performance and excitement potential of electric vehicles.
