Genesis, the luxury car brand under Hyundai Motor, has announced that it will exclusively sell electric vehicles (EVs) in the United Kingdom starting this year. The company is making a strategic shift away from combustion-powered models, with the remaining stock of gas and diesel vehicles expected to run out by the summer.
According to Autocar, Genesis will continue to sell its current inventory of gas and diesel cars until it is depleted, after which only three EV models will be available in showrooms: the Electrified G80 sedan, Electrified GV70 SUV, and GV60 crossover. These models will receive refreshed versions this year, with the Electrified G80 set to go on sale in April with an extended wheelbase and longer driving range. The facelifted Electrified GV70 SUV is expected to arrive at dealerships in the summer with improved range, while the GV60 crossover, sharing its underpinnings with Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, has also received a refresh.
Genesis has plans to introduce more EV models in the UK, including the performance-oriented GV60 Magma and the upcoming flagship GV90 SUV. Additionally, the company intends to add hybrids to its lineup in the future to offer customers a wider range of powertrain options.
The UK market has seen a significant increase in EV registrations, with Genesis experiencing a boost in sales of all-electric models. Around 80% of Genesis sales in the UK last year were EVs, with the GV60 being the top seller followed by the Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80.
To support its EV-focused strategy, Genesis will expand its dealer network in the UK by adding up to 15 new dealerships this year. This move marks a departure from the brand’s current approach, which only includes three physical ‘studios’ in London and Edinburgh.
Johnny Miller, Genesis UK’s brand director, emphasized the brand’s focus on creating desirability and establishing itself as a premium luxury car brand in the UK. He stated that Genesis is not aiming to chase volume but rather to showcase the experience that a Korean company can deliver.
In conclusion, Genesis’ decision to shift to an all-electric lineup in the UK reflects the growing trend towards EV adoption in the region. With a focus on electric mobility and a commitment to offering a diverse range of powertrain options, Genesis is positioning itself as a leading player in the luxury EV market.
