Stellantis has made the decision to cancel the long-range version of the Ram 1500 REV electric pickup truck. This particular model was equipped with an impressive 229 kWh battery pack, giving it an estimated driving range of 500 miles. However, a leaked email obtained by MoparInsiders revealed that Stellantis has instructed its suppliers to halt all activities related to this project and suspend any additional spending.
Despite the cancellation of the long-range model, the standard-range version of the Ram 1500 REV is still on track for a 2026 release. This version features a slightly smaller 168 kWh battery pack, offering a respectable estimated range of 350 miles. While it may not surpass the upcoming 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV in terms of range, it does outperform the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning.
Stellantis explained that the decision to cancel the long-range Ram 1500 REV was made to prioritize the advancement of Ramcharger technology. This move has shifted the focus away from the electric pickup truck and towards the range-extended Ramcharger model. Both models have experienced delays, but the Ramcharger is now slated for an earlier release in the first half of the year.
The range-extended Ramcharger is a groundbreaking vehicle, being the world’s first series-hybrid pickup truck. It boasts a dual-motor, all-wheel drive system with a combined output of 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque. The onboard V6 engine serves solely as a generator, providing power to the electric motors and battery pack when needed. This innovative setup allows the Ramcharger to travel up to 141 miles on electric power alone.
In addition to its impressive performance capabilities, the Ramcharger offers versatile charging options. The battery pack can be recharged from AC or DC sources at up to 145 kW, and the truck is equipped with V2V and V2H bidirectional charging capabilities. Furthermore, an onboard power panel in the bed can supply up to 7.2 kW of power to tools or appliances, making it a practical work truck solution.
With a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds and the ability to switch between electric and gasoline power sources, the Ramcharger presents a compelling option for those in need of a versatile and efficient work vehicle. Stellantis aims to carve out a niche for the Ramcharger in the competitive electric pickup market, and with its unique features and capabilities, it may indeed have a winning formula on its hands. Now, all that remains is for Stellantis to deliver on its promises and bring the Ramcharger to market successfully.
