Tesla Introduces Groundbreaking Feature to Warm LFP Batteries While Supercharging
Tesla continues to push the boundaries of innovation with its latest Supercharger enhancement. While recent updates have focused on high-powered charging for the Cybertruck, the company has now turned its attention to improving the charging experience for its more affordable vehicles.
Enhanced Battery Heating
Tesla has rolled out a new feature that allows Superchargers to heat LFP Batteries found in the Model 3 and Model Y Rear Wheel Drive variants. This update applies to both Long Range and Standard Range models, offering faster charging in cold weather conditions. The feature is part of the 2024 Tesla Holiday Update, which brought a host of unexpected improvements.
With the latest update, V3 and V4 Superchargers can now pre-heat batteries in Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with LFP battery packs. This ensures that drivers can get back on the road quicker, especially in extremely cold temperatures. Tesla recommends preconditioning the battery before arrival to save time and energy.
Tesla’s Director of Charging, Max de Zegher, explained the new feature, highlighting the use of AC ripple current to warm up the battery. By inducing small oscillations in the charging current, Tesla effectively turns the battery into an electric heater, speeding up the charging process significantly. This innovative technique leverages the versatility of the NACS connector, showcasing Tesla’s commitment to cutting-edge technology.
While the feature is currently limited to LFP vehicles, Tesla aims to expand it to other models in the future. The company continues to explore ways to improve charging efficiency across its entire lineup, paving the way for a more seamless driving experience.
