“The world doesn’t need another one of those,” remarked Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe, in reference to Tesla.
“We believe Tesla has achieved remarkable success,” Scaringe stated during a recent discussion with Green Car Reports and other media outlets. “It’s a renowned brand with exceptional products.”
The Rivian CEO acknowledged owning both a Model 3 and Model Y, but pointed out that every competitor seems to be chasing after Tesla.
The upcoming Rivian R2 is positioned to target the same market as the Tesla Model Y, but with a distinct visual design resembling a traditional SUV. It is scheduled to be launched in 2026 with batteries from LG sourced from Arizona.
Scaringe highlighted that there are currently “less than five highly appealing choices” in the sub-$50,000 EV market, with the Model Y being a standout option.
Expressing concerns about Tesla’s dominance in the EV market, Scaringe mentioned how Tesla’s significant scale puts pressure on suppliers, potentially hindering competition.
Scout, owned by Volkswagen which recently invested $5.8 billion in Rivian through a joint venture, also drew interest. When asked about Scout EVs, Scaringe remarked, “I find it amusing how much attention Scout is receiving,” and later added, “It’s encouraging to see more options emerging.”
