- Tesla demonstrates the functionality of the Cybertruck’s off-road modes
- Off-road modes on the Cybertruck include Baja, Overland, and Wade
- A software update in May introduced the off-road modes to the Cybertruck
Tesla introduced an off-road mode for the Cybertruck through a software update that was announced in May. They have recently released a video detailing how this new feature operates.
Similar to the off-road modes found in other electric pickups such as the Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV, Tesla’s off-road modes offer a combination of features that adjust vehicle characteristics for specific terrains, along with driver aids to assist in navigating these terrains.

Within the off-road mode, an Overland mode enhances traction for slow, technical driving over rocky terrain, while Baja mode is optimized for faster travel over loose surfaces. Drivers also have the option to adjust the handling balance using a touchscreen slider, allowing for increased stability or agility as required.
Wade mode raises the vehicle’s height and introduces pressurized air into the battery compartment to prevent water ingress. This enables the Cybertruck to cross water up to 32 inches deep, as per a Tesla off-road guide for owners. The feature is limited to 30 minutes at a time, and it may take up to 10 minutes to pressurize the battery pack, as noted by Tesla.
Tesla has also included Trail Assist, a low-speed off-road cruise control similar to what other manufacturers offer on their off-road vehicles. This feature automatically maintains a set speed (even while ascending and descending hills), allowing the driver to concentrate on maneuvering around obstacles.
In November 2023, Tesla unveiled the production version of the Cybertruck, maintaining much of the striking stainless-steel design that initially captivated audiences in 2019. However, the production model of the Cybertruck falls short of the $39,900 starting price and the 500-mile range that Tesla initially promised. Since its launch, the Cybertruck has experienced several recalls due to faulty wiper motors, loose trim, and sticky accelerator pedals.
