SpaceX is embarking on an ambitious project to build a massive solar factory near Austin, Texas. According to permit filings submitted to Bastrop County, the facility is expected to be capable of producing a whopping 10 gigawatts of solar power equipment. If approved and completed, this solar manufacturing plant would become one of the largest in the United States, with the capacity to churn out enough solar panels each year to power millions of homes.
The decision to establish this solar factory comes as SpaceX continues to expand its operations in Texas, where it already operates the Starbase facility and a vehicle manufacturing plant in the Austin area. The new facility will focus on producing advanced solar technology for next-generation Starlink satellites and Elon Musk’s vision of orbital data centers. These space-based computing hubs are designed to leverage constant solar energy, bypassing Earth’s power grid constraints to meet the growing global demand for AI processing.
By manufacturing solar cells domestically, SpaceX aims to scale up the power systems required for thousands of future satellites. The company currently employs over 1,000 people at its Starlink production hub in Bastrop, and the new solar factory will further solidify its presence in the area.
In addition to its solar endeavors, SpaceX is also making strides on the financial front. The company is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO) and has filed its S-1 prospectus, with plans to debut on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol SPCX as early as mid-June 2026. With a potential valuation exceeding $1 trillion, this IPO could go down in history as one of the largest ever, providing the capital needed to support the development of the Starship, expansion of Starlink, and the construction of the ambitious orbital AI infrastructure.
