Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has recently made an announcement regarding the discontinuation of the one-time purchase option for the Full Self-Driving package in Europe. This decision comes after the successful launch of FSD (Supervised) v14 in the Netherlands, where Tesla owners have driven their vehicles for a staggering 10 million kilometers in just one month.
The Full Self-Driving package, priced at €7,500 in Europe, will no longer be available for outright purchase after this month (May 2026). Additionally, the Enhanced Autopilot feature, which costs €3,800 and offers limited functionalities, will also be discontinued.
Interestingly, the phase-out dates for the outright purchase of FSD vary across European countries. For example, in Germany, the last date to buy FSD outright is 21st May, while in the Netherlands, it is 15th May. It is important to note that regardless of the purchase date, customers must take delivery of their vehicles before 30th June to retain the FSD package. Failure to do so will result in the removal of the package from the order, with a full refund issued.
Tesla owners in Europe still have the option to subscribe to FSD for €99 per month, providing them with a flexible alternative. The company aims to increase its recurring revenue through the subscription-based pricing model, as evidenced by the growing number of paid FSD users globally, which has reached 1.3 million.
During the Q1 2026 Earnings Call, Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja hinted at the wide approval of FSD in Europe by Q3 2026. By phasing out the outright purchase option for FSD, Tesla is positioning itself to capitalize on the subscription model and enhance its revenue stream.
Overall, the decision to discontinue the one-time purchase of FSD in Europe represents a strategic shift for Tesla as it focuses on driving innovation and sustainability in the electric vehicle market. Customers have until the specified deadlines to make their purchases and experience the cutting-edge technology that Tesla has to offer.
