Tesla has recently unveiled a new type of electric vehicle charger called the Basecharger. This innovative charger is designed specifically for electric big rigs, such as the Tesla Semi. While it may look similar to the V4 Supercharger designed for passenger EVs, the Basecharger does not require a separate power cabinet, making it an all-in-one DC fast charger.
The Basecharger is intended for use at electric truck depots, where the battery-powered trucks have longer breaks and can be recharged at a slower pace. According to Tesla, the Basecharger can deliver up to 125 kilowatts of power, which is sufficient to charge a Tesla Semi’s battery up to 60% in around four hours.
One of the key features of the Basecharger is its integrated design, which eliminates the need for a separate AC-to-DC cabinet. This simplifies installation and reduces operational costs. Additionally, up to three Basechargers can be connected on a single breaker, sharing up to 125 kVA of power.
In terms of specifications, the Basecharger can deliver up to 150 amps continuously, with a voltage output ranging from 180 to 1,000 volts. The cable length is 6 meters, double the length of a regular Supercharger cable. However, the only connector currently offered by Tesla is MCS, which may limit its use to Tesla Semis in fleet operations.
The Basecharger is priced starting at $20,000, but companies are required to purchase at least two units, and installation costs are not included. While the Basecharger offers a powerful charging solution for electric big rigs, it may not be compatible with trucks equipped with CCS connectors.
As Tesla continues to ramp up production of the Semi electric truck, the introduction of the Basecharger signifies the company’s commitment to expanding its charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The Basecharger complements Tesla’s existing 1.2-megawatt Megacharger, providing a range of charging options for the growing fleet of electric trucks.
