Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg has reached a major milestone by producing its 1 millionth drive unit. This achievement, announced on April 28, 2026, showcases the significant scaling of powertrain production at the German facility.
The drive unit is a crucial component of an electric vehicle, containing the electric motor, power electronics, and gearbox. Reaching the milestone of manufacturing 1 million drive units demonstrates the factory’s capability to move beyond vehicle assembly and into high-volume production of essential internal technology.
To celebrate this accomplishment, Tesla shared a photo of Giga Berlin staff outside the building, holding up rose-gold balloons that spelled out “1,000,000”.
Giga Berlin, located in Grünheide, officially opened in March 2022. Despite facing initial administrative delays and environmental challenges, the factory has quickly become Tesla’s primary hub for the European market.
The production of 1 million drive units follows a successful quarter for the facility. In Q1 2026, Giga Berlin set a new vehicle production record by manufacturing over 61,000 Model Y SUVs, averaging nearly 4,700 cars per week.
Tesla is currently undergoing a significant expansion phase at the site. The company has announced plans to hire 1,000 new workers starting in May and convert 500 temporary positions into permanent roles. This workforce increase aims to support a planned 20 percent rise in vehicle output, with a target of reaching 6,000 vehicles per week later this year.
Once operating at full capacity, Giga Berlin is designed to produce 500,000 vehicles annually. Achieving the milestone of 1 million drive units indicates that the facility’s powertrain lines are now operating at a scale capable of supporting these long-term production targets.
Overall, Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation and sustainable manufacturing practices in the electric vehicle industry.
