Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has officially started production of its highly anticipated R2 model this week. Customers who have reserved an R2 will receive invitations to customize their vehicles starting in June.
Claire McDonough, the Chief Financial Officer of Rivian, revealed in an interview with Reuters that deliveries of the R2 SUVs are expected to begin later this spring. The initial deliveries will focus on the Launch Edition of the R2 Performance model, priced at $57,990. This version boasts a 3.6-second acceleration from zero to 60 MPH, thanks to its dual motors generating 656 horsepower. It also offers a range of 330 miles and features like semi-active suspension, rear drop glass, dynamic lighting, and more.
Following the Launch Edition, Rivian plans to introduce a lower-cost Premium trim priced at $53,990 in late 2026, followed by the R2 Standard model at $48,490 in the first half of 2027. The company has also promised a $45,000 entry-level trim, which is expected to launch in late 2027. McDonough mentioned that as the R2 ramps up production, Rivian anticipates significant cost savings, with the cost of building the R2 expected to be half that of the R1 model.
