Tesla has unveiled a stunning new interior option for its popular Model Y in China, replacing the traditional white cabin with a fresh choice: Zen Grey. This update, produced at Gigafactory Shanghai, is available for all five-seat Premium Model Y configurations and has started appearing on customer deliveries this week. This marks the first significant interior refresh for the compact crossover since its global launch.
The Zen Grey interior introduces a softer, more unified palette, replacing the black-and-white contrast with a warm light-grey tone that covers more surface area. The seats, door panels, and center console trim now feature this new color, creating a brighter and more inviting cabin. The black accents on the console, door handles, and lower dashboard have been color-matched in the same pebbled vegan leather, enhancing the overall premium feel of the interior.
Tesla describes the Zen Grey material as durable and easy to maintain, while also delivering a more luxurious experience for passengers. Early images and videos from Chinese owners showcase the new shade reflecting natural light beautifully, enhancing the spacious Model Y’s airy and minimalist design.
This interior update is not an additional cost upgrade but a direct replacement for the discontinued white interior on Shanghai-built vehicles. Customers in China, Hong Kong, and Macau now see Zen Grey as the default light-colored choice when configuring a new Model Y. The update also extends to export markets supplied by Giga Shanghai, including Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines.
In addition to the interior changes, the refreshed Model Y from Shanghai features minor exterior tweaks such as blacked-out badges on certain trims and optional dark 20-inch wheels. These updates come at a time when Tesla is facing increased competition from domestic EV manufacturers in its largest market. By refreshing the Model Y’s cabin without raising prices, the company is demonstrating its commitment to value and continuous improvement.
With over 1.2 million Model Y units already on Chinese roads, the launch of Zen Grey gives existing owners a new talking point and prospective buyers another reason to choose Tesla. As deliveries increase this month, the updated interior is expected to become the preferred light-colored option across the Asia-Pacific region.
While Tesla has not confirmed whether Zen Grey will be available for Fremont, Austin, or Berlin-built Model Ys, Shanghai’s track record suggests that the option could expand quickly if customer feedback remains positive. Overall, this interior update showcases Tesla’s dedication to innovation and customer satisfaction in the ever-evolving electric vehicle market.
