Zoox, the Amazon-owned robotaxi service, is gearing up for expansion in major cities across the United States. The company recently announced plans to launch its services in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Austin, and Miami, in addition to the cities where it currently operates.
With a focus on driverless technology, Zoox has driven nearly two million miles autonomously and has transported over 350,000 passengers since its launch. The company’s unique vehicles do not have traditional driving controls like pedals and steering wheels. Instead, passengers sit facing each other on bench seats while the vehicle operates using a combination of cameras, lidar, and radar sensors.
In an effort to enhance the rider experience, Zoox has introduced new features to its app. These include an updated ETA feature for improved precision, pre-booking estimates to give riders a clearer picture of their journey, “Find My Zoox” to help passengers locate their robotaxi, and “ZooxCast” bluetooth capabilities for personalized audio options.
In Las Vegas, Zoox is expanding its list of approved pickup and drop-off locations to include popular destinations like the Las Vegas Convention Center and major hotels along the Strip. The company is also planning to serve high-traffic areas such as the Sphere and T-Mobile Arena. In San Francisco, Zoox is quadrupling its service area to include neighborhoods like the Marina, North Beach, Chinatown, and Pacific Heights.
For its upcoming markets in Austin and Miami, Zoox will initially limit trips to employees and their family and friends before opening up its service to the public. The company has already amassed a waitlist of over half a million people eager to experience its driverless technology.
Overall, Zoox’s expansion plans signal a growing interest in autonomous transportation and a shift towards innovative mobility solutions in urban areas. With its focus on safety, convenience, and cutting-edge technology, Zoox is poised to revolutionize the way we think about transportation in the future.
