Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology has reached a significant milestone with the completion of final vehicle testing in Europe. This breakthrough comes after years of efforts to bring the advanced platform to the continent, with Tesla’s European branch working closely with the Dutch vehicle authority RDW to achieve UN R-171 approval and Article 39 exemptions.
The rigorous testing process involved logging over 1.6 million kilometers of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) testing on European roads, conducting thousands of track test scenarios, and producing extensive documentation to meet compliance requirements. Tesla also collaborated with RDW on numerous safety studies and customer ride-alongs to ensure the technology’s readiness for European roads.
The European regulatory landscape has posed challenges for Tesla, with stringent safety standards under the UN Economic Commission for Europe framework. Unlike the more lenient U.S. regulations, Europe has historically required constant driver supervision and limited system-initiated maneuvers. However, recent amendments to UN R-171 have cleared technical barriers, allowing for hands-free highway lane changes and other automated features.
With approval expected in the Netherlands by April 10, Tesla is poised to bring Full Self-Driving to “patient EU customers” soon after. This milestone marks a crucial step in Tesla’s global expansion efforts, with plans to roll out the technology in other European countries following mutual recognition agreements.
In addition to Europe, Tesla is also making strides in other international markets. Full Self-Driving is already available in the United States and expanding rapidly, while plans for launches in China and the UAE are underway. These expansions are vital for Tesla as it looks to monetize its software offerings amid evolving global demand for electric vehicles.
For European Tesla owners, the imminent approval of Full Self-Driving promises to unlock advanced autonomy features that have long been available in other regions. This achievement underscores Tesla’s commitment to navigating complex international regulations and advancing its global autonomy ambitions.
