A Glimpse into SpaceX’s Starbase Facility in Boca Chica, Texas
Elon Musk recently shared a captivating nighttime photograph of SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, showcasing the rapid transformation of the area into one of the most ambitious launch complexes in history.
The photo reveals two fully erected Starship launch towers, with the second orbital launch pad, Pad B, now featuring its tower, OLIT-3. Standing at 474 feet tall, the tower includes an integrated water-cooled flame trench to enhance launch operations. This development signifies a shift towards high-cadence launch activities at the facility.

Pad 2 at Starbase is nearing hardware completion, with upgraded chopstick arms, a new chilldown vent system, and protective doors on all 20 hold-down arms. These enhancements are aimed at supporting the exhaust of up to 33 Raptor 3 engines during launches.
SpaceX has received approval to expand the Starbase launch site, introducing LNG liquefaction plants, expanded propellant storage, and additional ground support infrastructure to accommodate future operations.
Furthermore, Starbase achieved city status in May 2025 after a community vote, with SpaceX employees elected as mayor and commissioners. This legal status simplifies launch approvals and grants SpaceX control over local infrastructure decisions.
The FAA has approved an increase in launches from Starbase, allowing up to twenty-five launches per year. This boost in flight frequency is crucial for Starship’s missions, including lunar cargo transport, Department of Defense services, Starlink satellite deployment, and Elon Musk’s vision of human colonization on Mars.
From above, Starbase now resembles a bustling spaceport, poised to play a key role in advancing space exploration and commercial spaceflight.
